This is a poem written by one of our Recovery Care clients, Hani Dahir, titled “dark to light”. Content warning: addiction

I have always wondered

what the people I love were like before they

were absorbed by their addiction,

consumed by a quick buzz of satisfaction.

Indulging in a never ending cycle of addiction.

Stained by the mistakes of yesterday,

while ruining today.

Addiction is the pain that never waivers,

always thinking of the next high.

Becoming so low in life,

that you don’t value your life.

You become so filled with spite,

that you can’t see the light.

But just know when you learn to choose yourself,

everything will be all right.

“These poems represent moments I thought I could never put into words. I’ve had a lot of loved ones suffer with the disease of addiction, and I hope this poem leads you towards sobriety.” – Hani
