Learning Labs were created at the onset of the pandemic as attending school online posed greater obstacles for students. Serving majority East African and newcomer families in Minneapolis, these socially distanced labs began with traditional tutoring for students. However, GMCC immediately recognized the need for a more holistic approach encompassing the entire family. A more family-centered approach allowed GMCC to equip East African mothers with skills in computer literacy, financial spending, and family nutrition to ensure sustainable outcomes for their children.
As schools, adult daycares, and child daycares closed due to the pandemic, GMCC also created a program to assist East African and newcomer families struggling with food insecurity. The food security initiative, co-designed with community members, included a kitchen, an executive chef, food packaging, and a food delivery service.
