On Friday, March 13th, GMCC and Access Healing Center hosted a Community Iftar gathering from 6:30-8:30 PM at the Minnesota American Indian Center to celebrate Ramadan.

The event was free and open to everyone, with lots of delicious food & drinks like rice, sambusas, and tea from local Somali restaurants.

The space was beautifully decorated with balloons and banners thanks to the help of GMCC’s Wellbeing staff. We even had a special performance of balloon tricks from the “Bop Kids”!

Clients from Pathways Treatment Center who are part of GMCC’s Recovery Care programs attended. Many of these clients also regularly volunteer at GMCC’s Friday Drop-in Services, and are an integral part of our community.

GMCC Peer Recovery Specialists Nawal Osman, Safia Mohamed, and Sadad Omar spoke about the Recovery Care program, and had two clients share poetry & speeches about their recovery stories and how much these programs have meant to them.

“Thank you for being a light when I needed it. Places like GMCC give me an opportunity to volunteer and give back to my community by providing clothes, groceries, and shelter. I see people come in looking defeated, but leave smiling with their head held high. That’s what GMCC does.” – Recovery Care client & Friday volunteer

GMCC’s Executive Director, Adrienne Dorn, and Access Healing Center’s Executive Director, Musab Adam, also spoke about their organizations and thanked the community for the support.

It was a wonderful night full of connection, community, joy, and great food! Thank you everyone for attending and sharing space!
